About the event

1 Light, 2 lights, 3 lights, MORE LIGHTS!!!

Join us for a great opportunity to learn studio lighting techniques from one of the best technical headshot photographers out there, Adam Hills from MUG Photography.

This workshop is aimed not only to refine your Rembrandt and clamshell lighting, but to explore how you can be creative and clever and think outside the box, whether you have limited resources or loads of gear.

Adam will share not only his opinions on light placement, but the basic rules to follow and the pitfalls and mistakes photographers regularly make and how you can avoid them.

Learn the basic technical aspect of how to set your camera, trigger multiple heads and meter your lights, but this wont be 2 hours of theory on the inverse square law and lighting ratios, we’ll be getting straight to the fun stuff, the practical.

You’ll get a chance to interact, watch and learn from Adam’s extensive lighting knowledge as he does a mini shoot on each setup and teaches us on his style, directing and posing clients. All the images and information from the day will be available online for workshop attendees to keep. analyse.

The equipment Adam will use and demonstrate with on the day will be:

  • Studio Strobes & Speedlights - Profoto studio strobes, (including the new battery powered strobes and down to the New Profoto A1 speed light so you can see the capabilities of different types of studio heads) *
  • LED lights - A selection of LED panels and wands and blending their lower power output with the strong studio strobes
  • Natural lighting - Blending window daylight (if weather and venue allows.)

*WARNING!! YOU MAY WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON NEW GEAR AFTER THIS WORKSHOP!!

The timetable for the day will be free flowing, and allow for you to get involved and interact with Adam as he shoots:

10-11am

1 Light - A demonstration of how you can adapt 1 light to create very different results, depending upon positioning, distance and choice of modifier.

11-12.30pm

2 Lights - Showing the how you can create dynamic looks with addition of a second light, wether it be fill, rim or background lighting

12.30-1.30pm Lunch

1.30-2.30pm

3 Lights - Getting more creative with accent lighting and using lights for atmosphere. Adam will also cover how you can use studio lights to mimick daylight.

2.30-4.30pm

MORE LIGHTS - Key light, Fill light, Rim light, Background lights, Accent lights, Gelled light, Ambient light - A group collaboration to dig into Adams tool bag and use everything at his disposal to take it to a whole new level of lights for fun, and incorporate every element used on the day.

“The key word I’ve always tried to remember when lighting for headshots is making the light feel delicate. The exciting thing about headshots is there isn’t one set way to do them, and constantly challenging yourself to adapt the way you work can keep you moving forward” Adam Hills
